The Recycling Partnership’s Paying It Forward report estimates the U.S. needs to invest $3 billion to upgrade and expand sorting capabilities at material recovery facilities (MRF).
All materials face unique challenges in their journey to and through sortation. Our research and collaborations unlock these new opportunities to deliver more efficiency and quality, benefiting communities, recycling programs, and MRFs.
Aluminum cans are among the most widely accepted packages for recycling. These cans are an important material within the system and capturing every can is important.
The Can Manufacturers Institute research states, up to 25% of aluminum beverage cans are missorted at a typical materials recovery facility (MRF).

When we look at what materials are common items coming out of homes and often showing up at the MRF, there are categories of materials that have mixed acceptance rates. The materials represent a lot of weight and potential opportunities for MRFs and solutions are critical for a sustainable future for innovative packaging.
Some of this progress is already happening at scale through initiatives such as The Recycling Partnership’s Film and Flexibles, PET, and Polypropylene Recycling Coalitions.
The Partnership is working to drive MRF modernization investment through grants, material coalitions, and related material-focused education.
