For municipalities without a recycling program, or for those relying on a bag- or bin-based system, switching to a cart-based system has a number of benefits.
- Safety! and savings: Cart collection is safer for staff, reducing not just risk but also insurance costs.
- Convenience and Care: Carts with wheels and a lid are easier for residents and keep recyclables from becoming litter.
- Volume: Households generate an average of about 750-800lbs of recycling each year. Carts are definitely needed for that amount!
According to Vincent Leray, Grant Development Manager at the Recycling Partnership, the organization uses a multifaceted approach of logistical, marketing and financial support to help communities get up and running with cart-based programs.
“We have a grant for cities, counties and authorities. This grant includes funding for carts and education as well as technical support to help with the cart transition,” Leray says.
